BESWICK POTTERY Yorkshire Terrier Laughing Dog Figurine Ornament - Pre 1936 backstamp. The potential date of this piece may be discerned by it's backstamp. This piece would, according to the potteryfigurines website, have a pre-1936 backstamp as follows: "The earlier Beswick backstamps, dating from just after the Great War, take the form of a simple circular or oval shape created by the words ‘Beswick England’. Appearing in green, this will be a tell tale sign of one of the early pieces. By 1936 the mark had changed into ‘Beswick Ware Made in England’ appearing in beautiful flowing handwriting and the circular or oval shape had disappeared altogether." All other examples of this laughing Yorkshire Terrier dog figurine that I have found on Greatbritainlisted and elsewhere online have an entirely different backstamp to this one, making all of them late-1960's pieces or later. If this piece is a 1967 or later piece, then the use of the pre-1936 backstamp could be a manufacture error. Certainly, the pre-1936 backstamp on this piece makes it very rare indeed. This figurine measures 80mm wide by 65mm deep by 70mm high. It is in almost perfect condition, with only two very tiny chips to the varnish on the bow, and one small chip 1.5mm chip to the base, which can only be found using a magnifying glass or jewellers loupe (see pictures - the scale used is a mm scale). £20 Cash on collection from Birkenhead If you are unable to collect in person, I can post this item to any UK destination covered by normal Royal Mail postal services.
